Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis Report Available, HCI Chemtech Superfund Site
St. Louis County, Missouri

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released the Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) Report for the HCI Chemtech Superfund Site. An EE/CA is a report which evaluates various cleanup alternatives to address volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in soil and groundwater at the Site. A 30-day public comment period will begin on May 4, 2005 and will end on June 4, 2005. This comment period is your opportunity to provide information, raise issues on the EE/CA, or provide comment on this Site.

BACKGROUND

The HCI Chemtech Site includes the 14.9 acre active chemical distribution Brenntag facility and a portion of the 4.4 acre inactive former United States Coast Guard (USCG) Old Base. The properties, located on the Mississippi River in St. Louis County, Missouri south of downtown St. Louis, are zoned commercial and industrial. The principal chemicals of concern at the Site are organic solvents, which are traditionally used as degreasers and cleaning agents. The highest concentrations of these solvents have been observed in Monitoring Well (MW)-1 and MW-2, located in the north-central portion of the Brenntag facility. Other elevated concentrations have been observed in USCG wells MW-4 and MW-9, located along the southern boundary of the USCG property.
