From its beginning, NCAUR has worked directly with industry to achieve results of global significance, starting with the method for the mass production of penicillin.  The commitment to commercializing new technology continues today.  The process is facilitated through a variety of relationships using patent licensing and specialized agreements to protect the intellectual property of those involved, such as Confidentiality Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements, Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs), and others.  More information

NCAUR scientists work collaboratively with universities, private industries and other government agencies to develop new technologies. The capacity to collaborate has been strategically and significantly expanded to accelerate technology transfer.  The Pilot Plant is a modular facility for chemical, biological and food processing, located in the newly renovated north wing.  It encompasses over 65,000 sq. ft. with four two-story laboratory bays for scale-up research and concept demonstration.  Support laboratories for materials testing, evaluation and preparation are also available, along with access to in-house expertise.

This design provides a product development and production area within NCAUR capable of functioning as a business incubator and providing added value to private sector collaborations.

Additionally, legislative authority was obtained allowing materials produced in the pilot plant to be sold by the collaborator in order to prove market concept.  This unique authority for USDA-ARS laboratories to operate pilot plants and sell products produced in them was included in the Agricultural Research, Extension and Education Reform Act of 1998.
