Lightning Strike Starts Fire at Point Reyes National Seashore on March 3, 2009
Late in the day on Tuesday, March 3, lightning strikes knocked down and ignited two Douglas fir trees overlooking Bear Valley Trail near Divide Meadow, an area popular among hikers and park visitors.

2009 Harbor Seal Pupping Season at Point Reyes National Seashore
From March 1 through June 30, an annual closure of Drakes Estero is implemented to protect the harbor seals during this most sensitive time of year.  The closure applies to water sport users around harbor seal colonies in the area.  The National Park Service asks park visitors to avoid disturbing seals to ensure a successful pupping season.

Return of Elephant Seals to Point Reyes National Seashore Prompts Temporary Beach Closure for Winter 2008-2009
Due to the presence of the seals, a temporary restriction to people and dogs is in place until the end of April from the South Beach parking lot, south. A temporary restriction at the southern end of Drakes Beach and beyond the Lifeboat Station is also in place.
