State of the Border Region Indicators Report 2005
Supporting Data for Environmental Response
Metadata Summary (PDF) (6 pp, 105K)
Data Tables (PDF) (6 pp, 197K)
Environmental laws exist on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border region to regulate issues such as chemical production, pollutant discharge to air and water, and the generation, transportation, storage, and treatment of hazardous wastes. There are at least 19,000 regulated facilities in the U.S.-Mexico border region (English (PDF) (1 pg, 2.2M) | en Español (PDF) (1 pg, 2.2M), Data Table (PDF) (2 pp, 67K), Metadata (PDF) (1 pg, 35K) with an estimated number of 8,689 facilities in the U.S. and 11,059 facilities in Mexico. When a facility violates environmental law, the regulating agency may impose actions to enforce compliance and may also impose monetary penalties and/or criminal sanctions. The following indicators of environmental compliance were examined:
- Number of Enforcement Actions in the U.S. Side of the Border Region (English (PDF) (1 pg, 363K) | en Español (PDF) (1 pg, 340K), Data Table (PDF) (2 pp, 82K), Metadata (PDF) (1 pg, 40K)
- Inspection Results for Facilities in the Mexican Side of the Border Region, 2001-2004 (English (PDF) (1 pg, 301K) | en Español (PDF) (1 pg, 302K), Data Table (PDF) (2 pp, 90K), Metadata (PDF) (1 pg, 33K)
- Pollution Reduction from Federal Enforcement Actions in the U.S. Side of the Border Region (English (PDF) (1 pg, 299K) | en Español (PDF) (1 pg, 301K), Data Table (PDF) (2 pp, 96K), Metadata (PDF)) (1 pg, 34K)
- Number of State and Federal Inspections of Facilities in the Border Region (English (PDF) (1 pg, 316K) | en Español (PDF) (1 pg, 321K), Data Table (PDF) (2 pp, 77K), Metadata (PDF) (1 pg, 33K)
- Penalties in Number and Dollar Value in the U.S. Side of the Border Region (English (PDF) (1 pg, 284K) | en Español (PDF) (1 pg, 284K), Data Table (PDF) (2 pp, 77K), Metadata (PDF) (1 pg, 34K)
Refinements Since 2007
The Border Indicators Task Force is working to update the 2005 indicators and add additional indicators of the Border 2012 goal to improve environmental performance. Measurements that are being considered include:
- Measure use of environmental management systems in the U.S. and Mexico.
- Link data on U.S. regulated facilities to environmental outcomes using EPA's Facility Registry System (FRS).
- Use Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) data to measure releases and compliance.
The results of these efforts will be posted to the individual indicator pages (above) as they become available. If you would like to get involved, please send an email to Steve Young (Young.Steve@epa.gov).
