 search tips
Specific guidance for searching this collection.

Search for items using keywords, or by browsing the Subject Index.

Searches for individuals with common first names (such as James, John, George, and Thomas) result in large hit lists. To narrow results, search on last name only or look for exact matches with an individual's first and last name.

Generally, broadsides do not cite authors. Searching for famous patriots will produce results if the name appears within the full text of a document, if the individual was a signer of the document, or if the individual was cited in the bibliographic record.

For help with search words, go to Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention Subject Index and the Synonym List.

For help with search strategies, see Finding Items in American Memory.
