OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with success in residential drug rehabilitation for IDUs with or at risk for HIV infection in Poland. METHODS: retrospective chart review of all opiate dependent IDUs treated in 2 residential centers in Gdansk between January, 1988 and December, 1991. Success was defined as completion of a two year program. RESULTS: 30 (21%) of 141 subjects (98 male, 43 female) successfully completed the treatment program. Age (Mean = 25 yr., R = 16-42 yr.) and gender were not associated with success. Knowledge of HIV serostatus did not predict success in drug abuse rehabilitation: 23% (17/75) of subjects who were aware of their HIV serostatus succeeded in treatment compared to 20% (13/66) of those not aware. However, among the 53% (75/141) aware of their HIV serologic status, only 13% (5/39) of the seropositives completed treatment compared to 33% (12/36) of the seronegatives (OR = 3.4, CI 1.1, 10.9; p = .03). DISCUSSION: Subjects who were aware that they were HIV seropositive were at increased risk for failure to complete rehabilitation. This risk should be considered when IDUs receive HIV counseling and testing. Seropositive IDUs may require special, increased efforts to retain them in drug abuse treatment.
