Dear Colleague:

In Dear Colleague Letter GEN-06-15, the Department of Education provided the list of eligible academic majors under the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant) Program for the 2006-2007 award year. In Dear Colleague Letter GEN-07-02 we announced that it was our intention not to change the list of eligible majors for the 2007-2008 award year. However, as the new Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education, I felt it prudent that the Department review that list , taking into account comments and inquiries that we have received over the last year, and to provide an updated list that includes several additional eligible academic majors. Please note that we have not removed any eligible majors. Attached to this letter are two listings. One is a list of the new eligible majors and the other is the complete list of 2007-2008 eligible majors.

We apologize for the timing of this notification, as we know that the academic year is beginning and you may have already completed many of your financial aid packages. However, institutions must provide National SMART Grants to all potentially eligible students, including those in the additional majors, for the 2007-2008 award year. We thank you in advance for your assistance in awarding National SMART grants to eligible students.

Sincerely,

Diane Auer Jones
Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education
