Research Project: Eimeria Detection and Identification - Early Diagnosis

Location: Food and Feed Safety Research

Project Number: 6202-32000-024-40
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 01, 2007
End Date: Apr 30, 2009

Objective:
The application of Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) technology for the: 1) design of DGGE primers for the in vitro detection of individual Eimeria species; 2) apply Eimeria DGGE technology for the in vivo detection of Eimeria species in pre-harvest broilers and other food animals.

Approach:
Qualitatively evaluation and early diagnosis of Eimeria species infecting specific segments of poultry digestive tract. PCR and DGGE will be applied as molecular techniques utilizing primers specific for individual Eimeria species. Species identity and specific location can be used as treatment strategy against each Eimeria species.
