Research Project:
Integration of Spillway Erosion Technology and Wintr-20 with Windam
Location: Hydraulic Engineering Research
Project Number: 6217-13000-008-27
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 01, 2007
End Date: Jun 30, 2010
Objective:
This proposal includes two objectives: 1) Integration of spillway erosion technology into WinDAMa for the purpose of enhancing efficiency of software tools for design/analysis of earth dams, spillways, and other hydraulic structures; and 2) Integration of the NRCS WinTR-20 with WinDAMa. At present independent tools exist for evaluating auxiliary spillway integrity and embankment allowable overtopping. The focus of this effort will be to integrate these tools to conduct simultaneous computations. The focus of this work will be development of a tool needed by USDA for flood control dam design and/or rehabilitation. The product will be in the form of an engineering tool suitable for use by professionals involved in design and/or rehabilitation of dams and other hydraulic structures.
Approach:
ARS, NRCS, and KSU will work to integrate spillway erosion technology into WinDAMa by first identifying the application needs of the NRCS and the ways in which the results of ARS research can be used to most effectively satisfy the identified needs. Using the design statements resulting from this evaluation, the results of ARS research on spillway erosion and allowable embankment overtopping will be integrated with the existing NRCS software tool WinDAMa. Design statements will be re-evaluated and updated as the research and software development progresses. This approach will also be taken for integrating WinTR-20.
