Research Project: AN ANALYSIS OF AGROFORESTRY'S PHYSICAL, BIOLOGICAL, ECOLOGICAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL BENEFITS

Location: Dale Bumpers Small Farms Research Center, Booneville, Arkansas

Project Number: 6227-21310-008-27
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 01, 2005
End Date: Jul 31, 2010

Objective:
Provide information and technologies that address physical, biological, ecological, economic and social benefits derived from adoption of agroforestry practices.

Approach:
Paired watershed study is being conducted to determine effects of alley cropping on runoff. Herbicide fate is being investigated in field lysimeters. Watersheds will be used to test effects of agroforestry and grass buffers on runoff from pastures. Surface runoff collectors will be used to characterize runoff to and through constructed grass waterways and natural drainage areas. Flood-tolerance of non-woody and woody species will be evaluated in field. A study following Michelsen¿s institutional approach to understanding how policies influence the agroforestry adoption will be conducted. Effects of bottomland hardwood restoration practices on wildlife will be assessed. Varieties of pecan, black walnuts, hickory, pawpaw, and persimmon are being evaluated in the field. Management protocols for chestnut production are being field-tested. Surveys of attitudes of landowners towards agroforestry are being implemented.
