Background: The main goal of this work was to identify the ways in which youths live or hope to live their first sexual relationship and what are the level of information, the conceptions and the habits in relation to sexuality presented by these young people. We aimed at obtaining subsidy for planning DST/Aids prevention and sexual health programs for young populations which are directed towards their significance univreses, that is, the programs should be based on the youth's own needs and doubts. Methods: To achieve these goa1, 45 individual semi-structured interviews were carried out with students from public high schools in Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo-Brazil , with ages varying between 15 and 20 years, of both sexes, with or without sexual experience. Results: The data obtained by the interviews were qualitatively analyzed using na approach that tries to understand and interpret the meanings assigned by the subject himself/herself to his/her experiences. Conclusions: The analysis of the data showed that, in spite of tke fact that youths today have more freedom to talk about sexuality, a lot of doubts, partial information or mistakes, many conflicts and contradictions in relation to use of contraceptive methods , DST/Aids, virginity and sexua1 initiation still remain.
