OBJECTIVES: To study knowledge, perceptions, representations, expectations and suggestions related to condoms. METHODS: Mixt questionnaire completed during individual interviews with a random sample of 251 young adults aged 15 to 27, in 4 districts of Abidjan in nov., dec. 1991. Sex ratio (M/F) = 2; mean age: 21.2 (M), 20.2 (F). 91% have had sexual relations; 54% have a regular lover; 64.5% have used condoms at least once. RESULTS:-KNOWLEDGE: Almost all of them have heard of condoms: 81.5%, after 1985. Condoms are most frequently called: "capote" (53%), "chaussettes"--socks--(30%), "preservatif" (10%). 12 of the 31 vernacular names given to condoms are translatable by "caoutchouc"--rubbers--. 17% think "capote" does not mean exactly the same as "preservatif". FUNCTIONS: Condoms can prevent Aids (35% of choices), STDs (33.7) and pregnancies (30.4). 26% of the sample have a past experience of STD and 9% know a seropositive in their entourage. Condoms are the best known contraceptive methods (28% of choices), before the pill (25.5) and abstinence (21). PERCEPTIONS: Condoms are classified among medical objects such as drugs, syringes (27.5% of choices), contraceptive methods (20.6), toilet accessories (16.7) and clothing (7.8). 47.8% think condoms are efficient against AIDS, STDs, pregnancies; but they are considered as dangerous for health (12.2%) and embarrassing (47%). EXPECTATIONS, SUGGESTIONS: 96.4% wish to receive advice, mostly from media and medical teams. According to them, condom information should be associated with AIDS-STDs-Contraception info. (37% of choices) and with Health info. (30.4). Information should insist on the quality of condoms (89.6% of sample) and avoid provoking fear (72.2). To encourage their peers to use condoms, 46% would explain the serousness of Aids and the easiness of sexual prevention; 24% would provide them with condoms.
