Issues: Youth in Nigeria like other countries have a higher prevalence rate relative to the rest of the population. The unchecked spread of HIV among students of institutions of higher learning in Nigeria will lead to staggering costs in the near future. Until recent, few intervention programs have been developed for youths in institutions of higher learning. Based on this a group of young peer educators established Unibadan Anti-AIDS Society in 2003 to provide accurate information and education on HIV/AIDS/STDs, promote safer sex behaviour among the youths, train peer-educators/counsellors and advocate for the rights of YPLWHA. Description: 20 students of University of Ibadan were trained on HIV/AIDS. These pioneer members organized lectures, group discussions peer-led education on HIV/AIDS while promoting abstinence and consistent use of condoms. Working in concert with a network of PLWHAs and theatre arts students, education was enhanced through drama/role play and production of IEC materials. Lesson learned: By evaluation, at the end of 2003, we observed an improved level of knowledge on the modes of transmission and prevention, care and support as well the rights of PLWHA among students in the University of Ibadan. A group of 20 peer educators have also been trained in The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Nigeria. Recommendations: Management of institutions of higher learning should set up committees on HIV/AIDS involving lecturers and students. Counselling and student help centers should be established on campuses to provide information, counselling and free condoms to students and HIV/AIDS information should be introduced into academic curricula.
