Youth in peer group HIV/AIDS care and prevention initiatives.

ISSUE: Influencing positive behaviourial change among the youth require creative interventions using peers. PROJECT: Targeting Youth as a vulnerable group in the HIV/AIDS Scurge an intervention in Lira Commune using Youths (16-25 Years) was designed. Using Government/donor Support, Over 200 Youths were trained on facts about HIV/AIDS, Sexually Transmitted infections (STI), Counselling, Social Mobilization and work and sent to their parishes backed y support supervision. RESULTS: STI-Clinic attendance increased 3 fold due to peer referrals. Home based care for people with AIDS improved as each made at least 10 visits/month to offer assistance and report on health state. HIV/AIDS Sensitization in the district shot up to above 90% and peer to peer discussions easily held with less regard to taboo topics. LESSONS LEARNED: Youth Programmes implemented by Youth are more successful because Sensitive Communication barriers are eliminated.
