Youth mobilization and participation for HIV/AIDS prevention adopting enter-education strategies.

Effiong E; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1998; 12: 699 (abstract no. 33559).

ISSUE: Reaching In-school and Out School Youth with HIV/AIDS Information Using Innovative and acceptable approaches. PROJECT: Given the growing concern about the increasing spread of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria and the vulnerability of young people, an intervention using Enter-Education was developed. To this effect, youth from different target populations; secondary and tertiary institutions, community youth and Religious Institutions were given different skills for HIV/AIDS/STIs prevention and other reproductive health issues with an emphasis on enter-education programmes design. Strategies for Project Implementation included the following drama, songs, rallies and football competitions. RESULTS: Peer Educators have mobilized over 20,000 of their peers using various enter-education strategies i.e during special occasions like Valentine days, World AIDS Days etc they provide reproductive health information in a motivating manner using residual knowledge to bring out the impacted skills. They have established 22 youth clubs in different parts of Lagos, 12 drama troupes, 1 cultural dance troupe. A total of 3 HIV/AIDS songs have been composed and 11 drama scripts written. LESSONS LEARNED: HIV/AIDS prevention programmes for young people have great potential, if involvement of people relevant to the youth is a priority and they are allowed full participation from the planning to implementation stage.
