BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In this presentation we will focus on the question on how " evidence " form qualitative research can be used to assess the impact of technology on health care workers. We will focus on the difficulties and advantages of developing qualitative evidence for the organisation of health care. METHODS: A post-positivist qualitative research in 6 intensive care units and 7 neonatology units in Belgium on the impact of technology of the workorganisation of nurses. This social science research used a grounded theory approach, but for the analysis of data we were also very much influenced by the guidelines of Miles and Huberman. DISCUSSION: The major conclusion of the study is that one cannot solely focus on the effect of technology on health care workers, but should consider organisation characteristics and processes to assess the impact and effectiveness of technology. Based on these findings, we will discuss the nature of qualitative evidence and focus on the methodological prerequisites for valuable qualitative research as a contribution to health technology assessment.
