Background: It was intended to understand the significance that women living with HIV/AIDS, users of the public health system, give to the quality of such care in sexual and reproductive health, and how this significance affect the perpetuation of gender disparities. Methods: Three discussion groups were analyzed by means of a content analysis technique and from a gender point of view. Results: Relations supported by power disparity between users and health providers are observed, that flood the subjectivity of the undervalue the former are given to, with its subsequent "being for others", perceiving their bodies as something unknown and beyond their control and therefore, issues such as sterilization appear to be the decision of health professionals and not of themselves. Conclusions: In the health care system, the cultural dominating relationship between genders is reproduced and thus, women are doubly punished as living with HIV/AIDS appears to be a reason enough to eradicate sexuality and reproduction from their subjectivity, and not doing it appears to be a reason enough to get punished.
