Police save GF mother, child from fire

Grand Forks police officers rescued a woman and her child from an apartment fire today. About 2 p.m., Cpl. Jay Middleton responded to a call from Nikki Salinas at 422 S. Fifth St., who said she was trapped in her apartment because of a fire, according to a police department news release.

Greenway cleanup to cost about $72,000

Todd Feland, director of public works, told the City Council on Monday night that the Federal Emergency Management Agency will cover 90 percent of the cleanup costs. The state will cover another 7 percent, with the remaining 3 percent as a local share.

UND to train Saudi pilots

UND is training 27 Saudis to fly helicopters and as many as 48 more over the next several years in a contract worth about $17 million, according to a UND Aerospace Foundation official. Executive Director Chuck Pineo said the students arrived more than a week ago and have started English courses as a precursor to their pilot training.

Missing woman’s family raises reward

The family of Gina Anderson has raised the missing person reward for the Thief River Falls woman last seen Oct. 23. Jackie Pagel, Anderson’s sister, said in a Sunday statement to media outlets that her family is now offering an additional $5,000 along with the $5,000 reward already in place by the Carole Sund Foundation.

The Agriculture Department says North Dakota farmers have made progress in the fields but more warm, dry weather is needed. The latest weekly crop report says cool, wet weather has delayed planting and seed germination. The report says spring wheat is 13 percent seeded, nearly three weeks behind the average.

Ear on the marsh: Frog and Toad Calling Survey brings sounds of spring

With little fanfare hundreds of volunteers once again are tuning their ears to the marshlands, cruising survey routes across Minnesota listening for frogs and toads. It’s all part of the annual Frog and Toad Calling Survey, which the Department of Natural Resources launched in the early 1990s as a way to keep tabs on the amphibians.
