The Fish and Wildlife Service Responsibilities

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is part of the Department of the Interior. The Service is responsible for carrying out Federal laws and programs that conserve fish and wildlife and their habitats. The Service's major responsibilities are for migratory birds, endangered species, some marine mammals, and freshwater and anadromous fish. The Service manages the National Wildlife Refuge System and operates National Fish Hatcheries. The Service also administers the Federal Aid in Sport Fish and Wildlife Programs, which distribute excise tax revenues from sales of hunting and fishing equipment and motorboat fuels to States for fish and wildlife restoration.
