Row Actions

Row actions include:

  • Filtering rows to narrow search results to specific industries, geographic areas and other criteria
  • Sorting rows to rank results

Filtering Rows

Filtering is the process of displaying rows that belong to a certain topic of your choosing.

To filter rows:

  1. Select the "Filter Rows" menu item.
  2. Depending on the data set, you can filter by selecting one of the following options:
    • Geography,
    • Industry,
    • Other Dimensions (categorical variables) or
    • Data Value (numerical variables)
  3. Follow the instructions in American FactFinder to apply the filter.

The resulting data is "filtered" for your selections. You can also apply additional filters to further narrow down the data set.

To see what filters are currently applied to your data set:

  1. Select "Filter Rows" from the menu.
  2. Click "Current Selections".

To reset filters, or return the data set to the original amount of rows:

  1. Select "Filter Rows" from the menu.
  2. Click "Reset Filters".

Sorting Rows

Sorting rows helps you perform various rankings, for example, the top ten States with the most hydroelectric power generation plants.

To sort data set rows:

  1. Select "Options" from the menu. ["Options" appears only when the data set is (or is filtered to) less than 65,000 rows]
  2. Click "Sort Rows".
  3. Select the first variable you would like to sort by.
  4. Select "Ascending" (lowest ranking) or "Descending" (highest ranking).
  5. If desired, select a second and/or third variable to sort by.
  6. Click "Update".

The resulting data set is sorted based on your selections.

Note: The resulting ranking may not be accurate. If you sort descending on a column that has a data cell with a "D" (suppressed for disclosure), that row will fall to the bottom of the list. In reality, these rows may be higher in the rankings.
