KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- General Electric Transportation Systems' Global Signaling division in Warrensburg, Mo., has earned membership at the "Star," or highest, level of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). Global Signaling employs 173 people who assemble railroad signaling products, including steel and aluminum sheds containing electronic control equipment. A VPP recognition ceremony was held March 15 at the division's plant. "GE Global Signaling has exhibited excellence in safety and health management," said Charles E. Adkins, OSHA's regional administrator in Kansas City. "The division's outstanding efforts include management commitment to and employee involvement in safety and health programs." OSHA's VPP, which now includes more than 1,600 worksites representing more than 270 industries nationwide, recognizes and promotes effective workplace safety and health management. Companies in VPP achieve average injury rates 50 percent lower than others in their respective industries. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees.
