OSHA, Rochester Business Alliance, Form Alliance
Goal to Promote Safe and Healthful Workplaces Among Member Companies in
Rochester, NY Region

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Buffalo and Syracuse area offices and the Rochester-based Rochester Business Alliance (RBA) have established an alliance to promote safe and healthful working conditions for the 176,000 employees of the 2,337 RBA member organizations in the Rochester region.

The alliance will help foster a culture of safety and health excellence with RBA member companies and organizations by providing them with information and guidance that will help them protect employees' health and safety and increasing their access to, and sharing of, safety and health management information and training resources.

"Alliances such as this one are the cornerstone in our efforts to enlist the business community's help in making sure workplaces are safe and healthy," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "We must all work together for the common good - that of reducing injuries and illnesses in the workplace across the board."

"This model provides a new collaborative approach to managing safety and health that will assist RBA members in employee retention and increased productivity," said Sandy Parker, president of the Rochester Business Alliance.

The Rochester Business Alliance was formed when the IMC and the Rochester Chamber of Commerce merged earlier this year. OSHA previously had an alliance with the IMC, formerly called the Industrial Management Council. The Rochester Business Alliance is an employers' association that provides human resource-related services and comprehensive assistance on safety and health management and compliance for its member companies in the Rochester area.

OSHA's Buffalo and Syracuse area offices will work with the RBA to jointly develop and disseminate information on safety excellence and management; reach out to companies and organizations in the RBA's service area who are on OSHA's annual Site Specific Targeting list to mentor and counsel them on the merits and means to achieve safety and excellence; and promote RBA members' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs, such as the Voluntary Protection Program, SHARP, compliance assistance and consultation.

A joint OSHA/RBA implementation team will meet on a regular schedule to track and share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the Alliance. Team members will include representatives of OSHA's Buffalo and Syracuse area offices. The Alliance will remain in effect for eighteen months from the date of signing.

The Alliance was signed May 22, 2003 at the offices of the Rochester Business Alliance located at 930 East Avenue, Rochester, NY. Signatories are Sandy Parker, President and Chief Operating Officer, Rochester Business Alliance, Art Dube, Area Director Buffalo Area OSHA Office, and Diane Brayden, Area Director Syracuse Area OSHA Office.
