Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich has reappointed three members and named two new members of the National Advisory Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH). He also has added one year to the terms of six members.

Serving initial two-year terms will be Rebecca F. Moreland, president, Chesapeake Occupational Health Services, Inc., management representative; and Margaret Mock Carroll, manager of safety engineering for Sandia National Laboratories, safety representative.

Reappointed members are Nancy Lessin, senior staff for policy, Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health, public representative, for a one-year term; and Peg Seminario, director of occupational safety and health for the AFL-CIO, labor representative, and Andrea K. Taylor, occupational health consultant, United Auto Workers, health representative, both for two-year terms.

Members whose terms will be extended for an additional year are Kenneth J. Zeller, commissioner, Indiana Department of Labor, public representative; Kathleen M. Rest, chair, occupational health program, University of Massachusetts Medical Center, public representative; Dr. Henry B. Lick, manager of industrial hygiene for Ford Motor Co., management representative; Michael J. Wright, director of health, safety and the environment for the United Steelworkers, labor representative; Kenneth D. Brock, senior vice president and general manager, Liberty Mutual Insurance, safety representative, and James A. Merchant, professor of preventive and internal medicine, University of Iowa, health representative.

Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Joseph A. Dear said that extending the terms of some members will avoid the staggering of terms, which creates an unnecessary disruption of committee activities.

NACOSH was established by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 to advise the secretaries of labor and health and human services on occupational safety and health programs and policies.

Federal regulation requires that two members of NACOSH represent management, two members represent labor, two members represent the occupational health professions, two members represent occupational safety professions, and four members represent the public. The two health representatives and two of the public representatives are nominees of the Secretary of Health and Human Services, although the actual appointment is by the Secretary of Labor. HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala is expected to nominate another public representative soon.
