ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today joined the TriCounty Area Chamber of Commerce to promote workplace safety and health by training the employees of Chamber members in the prevention of injury and illnesses. Jean Kulp, area director of OSHA's area office in Allentown represented the agency at a recent signing ceremony. The TriCounty Area Chamber of Commerce, located in Pottstown, Pa., serves more than 700 businesses in northern Chester, southeastern Berks, western Montgomery counties, and along the Pennsylvania Route 422 Corridor. "OSHA and the TriCounty Area Chamber of Commerce recognize the value of an alliance which will help foster workplace safety and health for area employees," said Kulp. "Our goal is to educate employees on injury and illness prevention." Through the alliance, OSHA and the TriCounty Chamber of Commerce will work together to develop and deliver training and education programs on occupational safety and health issues relevant to area businesses. More than 1.4 million employees and nearly 28,000 employers across the U.S. have participated with OSHA in more than 584 strategic partnerships since the program began in 1998. OSHA operates a vigorous enforcement program, conducting almost 39,000 inspections and finding nearly 88,000 violations of its standards and regulations in fiscal year 2008. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
