Stickers
As part of YouthRules!, the Wage and Hour Division is making
available special stickers which employers may place on hazardous equipment to alert all workers that no one under 18
years of age may operate the equipment. The stickers are available from your local Wage and Hour Division Office or may
be printed directly from this website.
The use of these stickers is strictly voluntary, but the Department of Labor and our
YouthRules!
partners encourage their use. We believe that the stickers can play an important role in promoting positive and safe work
experiences for young workers.
The stickers are appropriate for use on many different types of equipment that minors under 18 years of age are prohibited from operating by the youth
employment rules. Such equipment include:
- power-driven meat slicers and meat grinders;
- forklifts;
- paper balers and cardboard compactors;
- power-driven bakery equipment, including mixers;
- power-driven woodworking equipment, including chain saws and circular saws,
- freight elevators; and
- other machines specifically prohibited by the youth employment
hazardous occupations orders.

There are four different stickers. The two "generic" STOP stickers may be used on any type of equipment or machinery.
One of these stickers warns employees that they must be "18 TO OPERATE OR CLEAN THIS EQUIPMENT." |
|
|
The other STOP sticker states "NO OPERATORS UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE." Both of these generic stickers picture a traffic "STOP" sign. |
|
|
A third STOP sticker has been designed specifically for use on compactors or balers. This sticker contains both English and Spanish information. |
|
|
A fourth sticker has been designed specifically for use on forklifts. In response to the high incidence of occupational injuries to young employees
involving forklifts, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Wage and Hour Division have developed this sticker. It pictures a forklift and alerts
employees that "NO OPERATORS UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE. IT’S THE LAW." The Wage and Hour Division is proud to partner with the State of Massachusetts on this
important matter. This sticker is available in both English and Spanish-English versions. |
Only the employer, or the designated representative of the employer, should affix stickers on equipment. Employers are urged to place the stickers in
conspicuous spots on the equipment, but to use care not to cover up other important information – such as safety instructions, model numbers, or emergency
guidelines – which may be required to be displayed by other laws or regulations.
These stickers are provided as another tool to help employers achieve and maintain compliance with youth employment rules. Employers are reminded that the
use of these stickers does not relieve them, in any way, from their obligation to ensure compliance with all youth employment provisions at all times.
The following instructions explain how an employer may print these stickers.
The four stickers are available in Adobe PDF format. You may view and print this sticker using Adobe® Acrobat® Reader TM version 5
or later available as a free download at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html. You may choose to
print either a single sticker (approx. size 4 1/2" x 4 1/2") at a time using Avery 5265 or other full sheet stock, or print six per page using 3 1/3" x 4"
labels like Avery 5514, 5524, 8164, or 6464. Click on the "Stop" sticker format you wish to print. (Do not use the browser's print function.)
