OSHA ANNOUNCES METALWORKING FLUIDS STANDARDS ADVISORY COMMITTEE PUBLIC MEETING MAY 18-19

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will hold a public meeting of the Metalworking Fluids Standards Advisory Committee on May 18-19 in Baltimore, MD.

The committee advises the Secretary of Labor on issues concerning the protection of workers from occupational exposure to metalworking fluids. There are 1.2 million workers engaged in the manufacture of automobiles, farm equipment, aircraft, heavy machinery, and other hardware that are exposed to these machining fluids. There is substantial evidence of serious health effects, such as occupational asthma, hypersensitivity, pneumonitis, dermatitis and cancer, that can result from this exposure.

The meeting will discuss the best practices related to using metalworking fluids and clarify criteria on systems management, medical surveillance, and training. Also, the committee may consider the issues of health effects, regulatory versus voluntary approaches to limiting exposure and economic feasibility.

Written data, views or comments for consideration by the committee may be submitted to Dr. Peter Infante, U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA, Directorate of Health Standards Programs, Metalworking Fluids Standards Advisory Committee, Room N-3718, 200 Constitution Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20210. Twenty-five copies are needed.

All interested persons are invited to attend. Anyone wishing to make an oral presentation to the committee on any of the agenda items also should notify Dr. Infante in writing. The request should specify the amount of time desired, the capacity in which the person will appear and a brief outline of the presentation. Requests to make oral presentations will be granted if time permits.

The meeting will be held in the Baltimore Marriott Hunt Valley Inn, 245 Shawn Road, Hunt Valley, MD, 21031-1099. The hotel's phone number is (410) 785-7000.

The committee will meet from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 18; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 19.

Notice of this meeting appeared in the Apr. 30, 1999, Federal Register.
