Region 6 News Release: 05-1115-DAL Wednesday, July 6, 2005 Contact: Diana Petterson or Elizabeth Todd Phone: (214) 767-4776, ext. 222 or 221 OSHA and ABC's Pelican Chapter Partner for Construction Safety
BATON ROUGE, La. -- Better health and safety for construction workers is the goal of a new strategic partnership signed today between the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Pelican Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. (ABC) in Baton Rouge. The partnership will actively promote and track mentoring -- a tool that has proven successful for OSHA's prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs that recognize worksites with outstanding safety and health management systems. OSHA's health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. The agency's area office in Baton Rouge will represent OSHA in the partnership. "The Labor Department is committed to protecting the well being of construction workers," said OSHA Regional Administrator John Miles. "This partnership is an important step towards meeting that goal in Louisiana." The ABC's Pelican Chapter in Baton Rouge, one of 80 ABC chapters nationwide, has more than 325 member companies and has worked cooperatively with OSHA's Baton Rouge area office since 2000. Besides increasing the number of companies taking part in mentoring activities, objectives of the partnership include reducing injuries from falls, struck-by and caught-in mishaps and electrocutions. Another key goal is to increase the number of ABC member companies in the association's Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) -- a voluntary program that guides employees in evaluating and increasing the effectiveness of their safety and health programs, policies and procedures. Employers and employees with questions about this or other OSHA partnerships may call the Baton Rouge area office at (225) 298-5458 or visit the OSHA Website at www.osha.gov. Since its Strategic Partnership Program began in 1998, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has formed more than 300 partnerships impacting over 13,000 employers and 573,000 employees across the United States. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
