SmartWay International Summit

December 2, 2008 through December 4, 2008 Press Release

On December 2-4, 2008, representatives from twelve countries gathered, along with major big box retailers, freight shippers and freight carriers, for the first ever SmartWay International Summit - Transforming the Global Supply Chain, to discuss collaborative ways to reduce greenhouse gases emissions from goods movement. The conference was hosted by U.S. EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership in cooperation with the University of Michigan’s Sustainable Mobility and Access Research Transformation (SMART) Exit EPA Disclaimer and Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI). Exit EPA Disclaimer

With the support of key partners like Sharp Electronics, Con-Way, YRC Worldwide, NYK Logistics Inc and American Trucking Associations, as well as from sponsors like Penske, PACCAR and Navistar, representatives from Australia, Belgium, the E.U., France, Japan, New Zealand, Sweden, and the U.K. attended the Summit to share best practices and exchange ideas.

Two key themes of the Summit were how to uniformly account for greenhouse gases produced from goods movement, and how to implement sustainable freight programs like SmartWay overseas.
Keynote speaker Andrew Savitz, author of "The Triple Bottom Line," emphasized the benefits of merging business and environmental goals.  Businesses all over the world are concerned with reducing the environmental impacts of shipping their goods. Programs like SmartWay can help them reach that goal.

SmartWay technologies were on display at EPA’s National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Lab along with a state-of-the-art hydraulic hybrid delivery van being developed by EPA’s Advanced Technology Staff.
