Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS)

Data Files

The PIRLS 2001 and 2006 data provide researchers access to information about the reading literacy of fourth-grade students in the United States and all participation countries. In addition to achievement scores, researchers can explore data related to demographic groups, attitudes and values, and learning strategies.

International Data Files
The PIRLS international databases, including data for all countries, and accompanying user guides are available from the PIRLS International Study Center.

U.S. Data Files
In each round of PIRLS, the United States collects information that is not part of the international assessment, such as the race/ethnicity of students and information on students’ participation in the federal free and reduced-price lunch program. The U.S. data files contain information about the United States only and include the U.S.-specific variables. These additional variables are available only through NCES.

The PIRLS 2006 U.S. public-use data files are available below. To obtain the 2006 U.S. restricted-use data files and 2001 U.S. data files, visit Publications and Products.
