  • The International Affairs Office coordinates the U.S. Department of Education's international efforts and advises the Secretary, Under Secretary, and other U.S. Department of Education officials on international matters that may affect U.S. education and/or Department policy.

    The International Affairs site provides important links to the many international education projects and activities in which the Department of Education is involved.

  • The Institute for International Education (IIE) provides a variety of exchange programs and projects between the U.S. and other countries. The IIE also produces an annual report, Open Doors, that provides data on U.S. students studying abroad and international students studying in the U.S.
  • The United States Network for Education Information is an interagency and public/private partnership whose mission is to provide official information assistance for anyone seeking information about U.S. education and for U.S. citizens seeking authoritative information about education in other countries.
  • The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) conducts comparative studies that focus on educational policies and practices so as to enhance learning within and across systems of education. The IEA serves as the coordinating body for TIMSS and PIRLS.
  • The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) serves as a body for its country members to coordinate their economic and social policies, including education policy. The OECD partners with NCES on the PISA and ALL studies.
  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is the United Nations' specialized agency for education and has three primary goals for this decade: 1) Promote education as a fundamental right; 2) Improve existing education systems; and 3) Share best practices with all nations.
