REGIONAL INFORMATION:
The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 4, is looking for energetic and highly motivated summer interns. Internships will be available for Environmental Engineers, Environmental Scientists, Life Scientists, Biological Aide/Technicians, Engineering Aid/Technicians, or Physical Science Aide/Technicians. Positions are available at the Regional Office in Atlanta, GA and the Science and Ecosystem Support Division in Athens, GA.
QUALIFICATIONS:
You must be a student to apply for the position. A student is an individual who is accepted for enrollment as a degree seeking student and is taking at least a half-time academic course load in an accredited high school, college, university, vocational or technical school.
Positions are full-time
Positions are temporary not to exceed September 30, 2009

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
As a minimum, applicants must have education in the following amounts:
GS-3: completion of one year above high school that included 6 semester hours in courses related to the occupation;
GS-4: completion of two years above high school that included 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation;
GS-5: completion of a full four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours in courses related to the occupation
Engineers/Scientists: minimum qualification requirements for these positions are listed below:
- Life Scientist, GS-401 series: Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position OR combination of education and experience including courses equivalent to a major as shown above.
- Environmental Scientist, GS-1301 series: Degree in physical science, engineering or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics; OR a combination of education related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
- Environmental Engineer, GS-819 series: Degree: professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
OR - Combination of education and experience--college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): Can be met by one of the following:
S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.
Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses. Grade-point average (G.P.A.) -- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
- 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
- 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
