Exciting Opportunity to Work on Voluntary Climate Change Programs
The Energy Supply and Industry Branch (ESIB) of EPA is seeking an intern from May through August 2009 at the Agency's Washington, D.C. headquarters. ESIB is responsible for a complex set of voluntary partnership programs aimed at protecting the earth's climate system and air quality. The Branch focuses on the development of innovative programs to prevent pollution, specifically through voluntary partnerships with businesses of all sizes that are implementing climate change management, green power, and combined heat and power projects with the assistance of EPA. The intern will work primarily with the Climate Leaders program, and will also help the Green Power Partnership and Combined Heat and Power Partnerships as needed.
Job responsibilities include the following tasks:
- Conduct research on new and existing partner companies for the development of fact sheets, ESIB program bulletins and newsletters, and other program materials
- Prepare for climate change conferences and webinars by working with EPA staff and event organizers to prepare materials, contact attendees, and plan logistics
- Assist in processing new organizations into the various partnerships
- Provide support to staff engineer in calculating greenhouse gas emissions
- Attend congressional hearings, press conferences, brown bags, policy meetings, and other events and prepare short briefing reports for program staff
- Maintain contact information databases and update website information
- Work on a long-term project that promotes intern's educational or career interests while contributing to the goals of EPA's ESIB Branch
- Other tasks as may be necessary or needed by the Branch's three clean energy and climate teams and/or Branch Chief.
Required Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Familiarity with business practices and business communication methods
- Ability to work effectively with Microsoft Office programs (especially Excel), Power Point, and Lotus Notes
- Capacity to work independently and juggle multiple deadlines
- Excellent writing and editing skills
- Professional phone manner and public demeanor
- Prior experience on climate change, environmental management, or corporate communications issues a plus
The internship provides an opportunity to obtain:
- Hands-on experience in corporate climate change management and communications, and climate change program implementation
- An enhanced understanding regarding the functions of a government agency
- Knowledge about renewable energy, energy efficiency issues, and climate change.
Candidates should possess valid U.S. work authorization prior to application.
