Basic Information

The core of EPA data registries services is a metadata registry.  Due to the complexity of the software, user-friendly front ends are being developed to assist users in entering and maintaining data dictionaries, data standards, and reusable or important code sets (also known as permissible or valid value lists).  Concepts that help organize and relate information within the registry are developed by metadata specialists in conjunction with program offices and other users.  Users are encouraged to add concepts and “meaning” to their definitions for each data element within the registry.  This semantic information facilitates the effectiveness of web services and comparison tools that allow data to be located and matched across agency systems.

Reuse of code sets for multiple systems is encouraged.  Registration of a code set into the registry establishes a means for quality control and efficient maintenance.  Developers are encouraged to use existing code sets in multiple systems when appropriate. Mappings to standards or to common sets of meaning are encouraged.  Automated tools are being developed to permit translations between sets of codes.

A number of tools support the data registry services.  The core data registry is currently available and contains all the EPA data standards.  Other tools are now under development and due to be completed by the end of 2008 or in 2009. These include a:
