Research Project: Design of a Field Raised-Bed Trough System for Strawberry Production in California

Location: Water Management Research

Project Number: 5302-13220-004-16
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Feb 01, 2009
End Date: Jan 31, 2010

Objective:
1. Determine the effect of trough configuration, growth substrate, and fabric liner properties on water retention and nutrient transport, 2. Develop and field test a drip system for water and nutrient delivery to the troughs at desired rates and frequencies with minimum leaching or runoff losses, 3. Field test the drip-trough system for strawberry production and disease avoidance.

Approach:
A combination of modeling, laboratory and field studies will be used to compare the trough configuration, growth substrate and fabric liner for water and nutrient retention. A field trial will be conducted to test the design and operation for strawberry production after the two best combinations are determined from the modeling and laboratory studies. Documents Reimbursable with CAL Strawberry Commission. Log 37800.
