Research Project: Ohelo Berry a Specialty Ornamental and Value Added Crop of Hawaii

Location: National Clonal Germplasm Repository (Corvallis, Oregon)

Project Number: 5358-21000-038-07
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Sep 15, 2008
End Date: Sep 14, 2011

Objective:
This is a Coordinated Agricultural Projects (CAPs)brought together scientist, economist, extension and industries in Hawaii and Oregon to: 1) to develop tissue culture production protocals for Ohelo berry clones, 2) investigate cryogenic preservation techniques for Ohelo berry clones, 3) develop molecular fingerprints for Ohelo berry clones, 4) conduct nutrient analysis for Ohelo berries.

Approach:
1)Our approach is going to expand the basic tissue culture protocals and adapt them to large scale commercial production; 2)Apply general Vaccinium cryogenic procedures and determine which are best for Ohelo berry; 3) Use molecular markers that work for closely related Vaccinium and apply them to Ohelo berry; 4) Analyze berries for total phenolics, total anthocyanins, vitamin C, titratable acidity, brix and ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity.) Documents SCRI Reimbursable with CSREES (Associated with F. Zee 5320-21000-012-06R).
