Research Project: Improving Citrus Nutritional Properties and Quality to Benefit Human Health and Enhance Citrus Utilization

Objective:
(1) Establish baseline metabolic profiles of healthy citrus plants through the use modern analytical methods, and, (2) compare the profiles of California Citrus to those obtained from Florida Citrus samples infected with citrus greening, and, (3) identify diagnostically-significant metabolites.

Approach:
Samples for this study will include sweet (Navel & Valencia) and mandarin oranges. Samples will be obtained from the Citrus Variety Collection at the UC Riverside campus and from the various growing regions within the state of California. Samples of fruit from healthy and unhealthy trees in Florida will be obtained from a USDA collaborator. Fruits will be processed into juice and stored as such until analyzed by both GC-MS and LC-MS analyses. Additional analyses including °Brix, titratable acids and others will be performed as needed. Initial data analysis and the subsequent statistical analysis will be conducted at the Western Regional Research Center, Albany, CA.
