Objective:
To develop and formulate effective management strategies for the beet leafhopper to reduce damages caused by purple top disease to the potato industry in the Columbia Basin of Washington and Oregon.

Approach:
Develop management strategies for potato purple top disease by determining susceptibility of different potato plant growth stages to BLTVA phytoplasma under field conditions and timing applications of selected insecticides targeted against the beet leafhopper. Also, assess the impact of the timing of BLTVA infection on the potato yield, tuber processing quality, and phytoplasma transmission rate in daughter tubers. Documents SCA with OSU.
