Research Project:
BREEDING PIERCE'S DISEASE RESISTANT TABLE AND RAISIN GRAPES AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF MARKERS FOR ADDITIONAL SOURCES OF RESISTANCE
Location: Crop Diseases, Pests and Genetics
Project Number: 5302-21220-005-10
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Oct 01, 2006
End Date: Jul 14, 2008
Objective:
Develop PD resistant table and raisin grape germplasm/varieties with fruit quality equivalent to standards of present day varieties. Develop molcular markers for Xf/PD resistance in a family (SEUS) other thant those from V. arizonica.
Approach:
1) Backcross hybrids [(V. rupestris x V. arizonica) x V. vinifera seedless table and raisin grapes] that have been selected for Pierce's Disease (PD) resistance to high quality V. vinifera seedless table and raisin grapes. 2) Hybridize bunch grapes from the southeastern US that have PD resistance as shown by greenhouse tests with high quality V. vinifera seedless table and raisin grapes. 3) Embryo rescue will be used to facilitate the use of seedless plants as parents. Seedlings will be propagated to conduct greenhouse screening for PD and field evaluation of fruit characteristics simultaneously. 4) 170 plants from V vinifera x Southesat US resistant material will be evaluated in the greenhouse for resistance to PD. SSR primers will be used to develop markers to detect resistant genotypes. Documents Reimbursable with UC-DANR. Log 31000. Formerly 5302-21220-004-15R. (08/2008)
