Research Project:
Develop Management Practices Using Surface Water Seals and Tarps to Reduce Fumigation Emissions
Location: Water Management Research
Project Number: 5302-13220-004-05
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Nov 01, 2005
End Date: Sep 30, 2008
Objective:
To develop field management practices that reduce fumigation emissions while achieving good soil pest control.
Approach:
Laboratory column experiments, small field plot and large field trials will be used to achieve our research goals. Laboratory tests with soil columns will be used to determine the optimal amount of water and application frequency to achieve maximum reduction of emissions. Small field plot experiments will be used to test treatments that are effective in column studies. Finally, a large field trial with minimum 5 acres of plots will be conducted to test practices that are practical and most efficient in reducing fumigant emissions from small plot tests. Fumigants tested in this study will focus on 1,3-D and chloropicrin (CP), two of currently registered alternative fumigants to methyl bromide. For all the laboratory experiments and field trials, both emissions and fumigant concentrations in soil profile, especially in gas phase, will be measured. Soil fumigant concentration over time will be used to evaluate fumigation efficacy at several depths. Documents Reimbursable with CDFA. Log 29658. Formerly 5302-13220-003-15R (2/08).
