NAEP 2001 geography was a continuation of an assessment first administered in 1994.

National samples were selected from approximately 1,100 public and nonpublic schools at grades 4, 8, and 12.

Approximately 25,000 students were assessed in the national sample.

Questions addressed three main content areas: Space and Place, Environment and Society, and Spatial Dynamics and Connections.

Students answered multiple-choice and constructed-response questions.
