How did EMPACT Work?

EMPACT funded proposals submitted by EPA and local government applicants. As both selection processes were competitive, proposals were subjected to rigorous peer review procedures. All successful EMPACT projects were required to have three critical components: environmental monitoring, information management, and communication.

EMPACT also actively sought out new technologies and solutions to challenges facing its projects and provided projects with different types of technical support including risk communication, information management, environmental monitoring, and visualization.

The success of many EMPACT Projects resulted in other communities expressing interest in starting similar projects. As a result, EMPACT developed a Technology Transfer Initiative designed to help new communities replicate successful EMPACT projects. Similarly, many EMPACT projects wanted to integrate other local environmental data with their information offerings. The EMPACT Integration Initiative helped these projects provide residents with a more comprehensive and integrated picture of local environmental conditions.
