Technical Abstract: This chapter reviews different detergent materials which have been synthesized from natural agricultural commodities. Background information, which gives reasons why the use of biobased materials may be advantageous, is presented. Detergent builders from L-aspartic acid, citric acid and D-sorbitol are all discussed. Products which bind to hard water ions and inhibit crystallization can be synthesized or by changing conditions, absorbing polymers can also be produced. Surfactants are synthesized from epoxidized oleochemicals. Using epoxidized methyl oleate, or epoxidized soybean oil, either ionic or nonionic surfactants can be made. These materials have been compared to commercial products in emulsification of oil in water emulsions and for controlled drug release.
