Research Project: Evaluation of New Pearl Millet Hybrids

Location: Crop Genetics and Breeding Research

2008 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Identifying superior performing experimental pearl millet hybrids in multilocation trials in the coastal plain and piedmont regions of Georgia to support new variety release. Transfer new technology to the agribusiness community through a field day at Newton, GA.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Thirteen experimental hybrids will be assessed in replicated field trials for yield, damage by diseases and insects, and agronomic traits.

3.Progress Report
This project supports the in-house project Objective 2 – Enhance bioenergy production from warm-season grasses. Thirty experimental hybrids were planted at the collaborator’s location as one site of a multi-environment evaluation. Samples harvested from the 2007 growing season were evaluated for fermentability and ethanol yield. The Authorized Departmental Officer's Designated Representative for this project has monitored project progress through regular location visits for data collection.
