Research Project:
Baseline Ecological Health Survey
Location: Range Management Research
2008 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
1) To evaluate use of remotely located electronic sensors to monitor off-road vehicle use of arid and semi-arid rangelands. . 2)To complete and evaluate a landscape-scale, ecological site-based baseline ecological health survey based on protocols and indicators developed at the Jornada Experimental Range.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
1) A suite of sensors will be selected based on literature evaluations of durability, accuracy and precision. The sensors will be placed in multiple locations in areas where Off-Highway-Vehicle traffic is anticipated using a randomized complete block design with one sensor of each type per block. The blocks will represent a range of conditions. A motion-activated photo sensor and human observers will be used as the standard/control. . 2)A landscape will be stratified into ecological site and, to the extent possible, ecological state using recently developed state and transition models. Plots will be randomly selected within each site/state combination.
3.Progress Report
In FY 2008, we made significant progress towards addressing both objectives. Relative to Objective 1, a preliminary test of the sensors was completed on the Jornada Experimental Range. Sensors were subsequently installed on Fort Bliss and are currently under evaluation. Objective 2 is shared with the projects listed below. In FY 2008 we completed establishment and measurement of new plots and analyzed the data together with DOD collaborators. The data will be used by the military and other organizations to improve the integration of ground-based and remote-sensing data and to improve monitoring precision and cost-effectiveness. This project is an extension of projects 6235-11210-005-27R, 34R, 35R, 37R, 41R and 51R.
