Research Project:
In Vitro Testing of Immunostimulating Plant Extracts
Location: Animal Parasitic Diseases
2008 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To evaluate plant extracts for their immunostimulatory activities using various in vitro immunoassays.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
In vitro systems will be developed to investigate immunomodulatory effects of phytonutrients in avian macrophages. Initial emphasis will be placed on evaluating the effect of various phytochemicals extracted from various plants on the induction of chicken cytokines.
3.Progress Report
This is a new trust designed to evaluate novel plant-derived products for immunoenhancing activities. Evaluations will be performed using various immunoassays established at ARS. Initial studies involving several plant-derived phytonutrients that exhibit well-known immunomodulatory activities in humans, resulted in three demonstrating strong immunostimulatory activities in chicken macrophages. Work progress is monitored by regular meetings and formal written reports.
