Research Project: The Role of the Placenta in Transmission of Experimental Bse from Sheep to Sheep

Location: Animal Diseases Research

2005 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a specific cooperative agreement between ARS and VETERINARY LABORATORIES AGENCY. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 5348-32000-021-00D BSE and other TSES Ruminant Herbivors: Diagnosis, Transmission and Genetics. A group of susceptible (QQ) ewe lambs were orally dosed with inoculum from the brains of cattle infected with BSE. The ewes were bred and the placentas from the lambings collected. The placentas will be tested for PrP-d by Western blot and IHC. VLA will do the oral dosing, collect the samples, and perform the Western Blots. VLA will send the formic acid treated samples in paraffin blocks to Pullman for IHC. ARS will perform the IHC staining with appropriate primary antibodies for PrPd detection.
