Welcome to the Clean Air Technology Center Web Site

The CATC provides technical support in evaluating air pollution control technology questions for stationary sources.

CATC services and products are available at no cost to State and local agency and EPA Regional office staff. Others can use CATC services, but some services may be available only on a cost reimbursable basis. The center offers a wide range of technical assistance on:

  • Air toxic emissions and control strategies
  • Control technology applications
  • Operation and maintenance problems
  • Source emissions and control strategies.

The CATC provides ready access to EPA information and expertise. The Center draws on professional staff from both EPA's Office of Research and Development and Office of Air and Radiation. Private consultants also are available when appropriate. The CATC does not provide policy guidance or compliance advice.

National Association of Clean Air Agencies (formerly STAPPA and ALAPCO) advise the CATC on how to best serve and respond to State and local agency needs. The technical needs identified via the CATC serve as a resource for future program development within EPA.

CATC Services

The CATC provides these types of assistance:

HOTLINE

The HOTLINE (919-541-0800) provides rapid response based on information available immediately from the EPA and its contractors. By telephoning the CATC HOTLINE, you will reach the EPA personnel most knowledgeable about your problem.

Engineering Assistance

Where more in-depth engineering assistance such as an engineering analysis or on-site support may be needed, EPA and its contractors can provide assistance on a range of topics, including:

  • Evaluation of source emissions
  • Identification of control alternatives
  • Estimation of control costs
  • Advice on permit conditions to ensure good operation and maintenance of control equipment.

Technical Guidance

Control technology guidance and information transfer focus on, but are not limited to, topics of national interest that are identified through contact with State and local agencies. Technical guidance takes several forms, depending on the best method of information transfer. These include:

  • Alternative control technology documents for specific types of air pollution sources
  • Personal computer software to assess emissions, control problems, and potential solutions
  • Seminars and workshops on control technology issues.

Small Business Assistance

The CATC is the focal point for coordination of efforts among the four assistance centers participating in the EPA's Small Business Gateway. This site provides support primarily to State small business assistance programs on:
  • Federal air pollution standards
  • Air pollution control technologies
  • Air emissions testing and monitoring methods
  • Accidental chemical release prevention
  • Hazardous chemical emergency planning
  • Pollution prevention methods.

International Technology Transfer Center for Global Greenhouse Gases

The Global Greenhouse Gases Technology Transfer Center provides technology transfer regarding greenhouse gas emissions. This assistance includes characterizations of global emissions from anthropogenic sources, and available prevention, mitigation, and control technologies/strategies for major sources of greenhouse gases. Information is available for methane emissions from landfills and other waste management facilities, the natural gas industry, and coal mining. In addition, information is available on biomass utilization for energy generation and production of liquid fuel, and for pollution prevention technologies.
