Facilities can reduce the environmental impacts of their products and services in part by improving the environmental performance of their suppliers.

Any of the indicators listed in the Inputs and Non-product Outputs stages of the Performance Track Environmental Performance Table may be relevant to a facility's activities with its suppliers. Thus, Performance Track members may select to report their achievements and goals using any of these indicators, as long as they represent the effects of the facility's interactions with its supplier and not the supplier’s facility-wide performance.

For example, if a Performance Track facility assisted a supplier in increasing the energy efficiency of a production process that manufactures parts that the Performance Track facility procures, the facility would report the energy use for this production process, but not the facility’s entire energy use.

Methods to Improve Environmental Performance of Suppliers

The Green Suppliers Network offers benefits to Performance Track member facilities and is a powerful resource for large manufacturers to productively engage their small and medium-sized suppliers in low-cost technical reviews that focus on process improvement and waste minimization.  The Network brings together industry, EPA, and the U.S. Department of Commerce's Manufacturing Extension Partnership, a leading provider of technical assistance to manufacturers.
