The EPA uses a number of methods to control the release of pollutants into the environment. Setting standards for emissions from industry, motor vehicles and other sources, reduces the amount of pollutants released into the air, water and soil. Voluntary standards encourage businesses and other institutions to adopt ecologically sound procedures that not only help the environment, but often reduce costs as well. Funding the development and implementation of new technologies leads to improved characterization and treatment of contaminated waste sites, soils, and groundwater. Emergency response and cleanup activities help contain the effects of accidents and spills by limiting the damage they may cause to the broader environment.
