About the Class Size Reduction Program

The final distribution of Class-Size Reduction funds was made to states on October 1, 2001. For FY 2002, the Class-Size Reduction Program was incorporated into the new ESEA Title II Teacher Quality block grant. States and local education agencies may use any portion of the nearly $3 billion in Title II funds to, among other purposes, hire qualified teachers to reduce class size. Visit the No Child Left Behind Act web site for current information about Title II, and other Elementary and Secondary Education programs reauthorized by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

School districts received a total of $1.6 billion in funds that enabled them to recruit, hire, and train 30,000 new teachers for the 2001-2002 school year.
